Free Cover Letter Generator, No Sign-Up: We Tested 8 (2026)

Short answer: of eight popular "free" cover letter generators we tested on September 26, 2026, six asked for an account before they would hand over a file. Two of those asked before we could even start writing. Two did not ask at all: coverlettertemplates.io, whose Download button opens your browser's print dialog, and Enhancv, which generated a letter without a login, although we could not confirm its download. HonestPDF's own Cover Letter Generator gives you a PDF or a Word file with no account. It is in the test too, last, held to the same rules.

Nobody writes a cover letter at a good time. You write it at 11:40 p.m., the application closes at midnight, and the search result says "free cover letter generator." So you type your name, your experience and the hiring manager's name into a form, the preview looks great, and you press Download. That button is the only thing this test is about.

How we tested

• One made-up applicant everywhere: Alex Morgan, a junior graphic designer applying to "Northwind Studio," with an example.com email address. No real personal data went into any of these sites.
• The same job and the same letter on every tool, each on the English version of its site.
• We did not create any accounts and did not pay for anything. The first time a tool asked us to sign up, we wrote down where and stopped.
• Tested on September 26, 2026. These sites change often, so treat this as a snapshot.

Because we stopped at the first sign-up screen, we can't tell you what any of these charge after you make an account.

The results

Zety: fourteen questions, then a sign-up form

Zety doesn't open an editor. It interviews you: how long you have been working, whether you are a student, what you studied, a template and your name, the job and the job description, your top three strengths, your last job title, gaps in your work history, your working style and your signature. We counted about fourteen screens before we saw a letter.

The AI draft still had template brackets in it: "I have honed [Job Skill 1] and [Job Skill 2] skills while being proficient in [Strength 1]." The greeting was "Dear [Ms. or Mr. Last Name]," the opening paragraph appeared twice, and a junior designer with under three years of experience was described as having "a lengthy and rewarding career." The address field was also filled in with a city we never typed, guessed from our connection.

Download opened a "Create an account" form: Google, Facebook, or email and password.

MyPerfectResume: the same builder, the same stop

Its start page said "Just three easy steps," where Zety's said "Just three simple steps." After that, the questions came in the same order on the same kind of screens, with the same "by clicking Create My Cover Letter you agree" line in the footer. It stopped in the same place: Download, then "Create an account."

Resume.io: the email comes before the letter

The page is titled "Free Cover Letter Generator," and some templates carry a "FREE" badge. After skipping the template and "Connect your social profile" and typing a name, the next screen said "Supply contact information. Enter your email address below," above the line "By signing up via your social profile or by email you agree..." The sign-up comes before a single sentence of the letter.

Canva and Adobe Express: the account is the front door

On Canva's "Free Cover Letter Maker" page, every "Create a cover letter" button links to a sign-up page. On Adobe Express, "Edit this template" opens the editor behind a sign-in dialog. Both have real free plans, and if you already have an account with either, they are a fine choice. Here "free" means free once you have an account.

FlowCV: the most upfront of the sign-up group

No questionnaire, just a plain editor with a live preview, and it says clearly: "Your first cover letter – 100% free, forever, all features, unlimited downloads, yes really." The word to notice is first. We wrote the letter without an account; Download asked us to create one, with Google or email.

Enhancv: no login to generate, and a long web address

Enhancv's generator asks for your resume instead of an account: upload a PDF or Word file, paste the job ad, and press Generate. The page says it uses OpenAI's GPT model to read the uploaded resume, and that Enhancv does not share your data with third parties or use it for AI training.

It wrote the best AI draft in this test and used the facts from our fake resume correctly. It also invented one: "Having admired your work in the Portland community," which the applicant never said. The phone line was left as "[Phone number]."

"Edit & Download" then moved the letter to Enhancv's editor inside the page address itself. We decoded the link: it held the name, email, city and the entire letter. A web address can end up in browser history, analytics and server logs.

We could not confirm the download. In our setup the editor's Download button did not respond, and the generator did not finish in a fresh browser (the page is protected by reCAPTCHA). So Enhancv gets no verdict on the question this test asks.

coverlettertemplates.io: free, and it prints

No sign-up and no questionnaire. The form sits next to the preview: name, contact details, job, company, two skills and one body paragraph. "Download PDF / Print" opens your browser's print dialog, where you choose "Save as PDF." There is no Word file, and it is worth checking the print preview for your browser's own headers and footers before you save.

HonestPDF: our own generator

Same applicant, same letter. No account and no questionnaire: you fill in the form, pick one of five layouts, and press Download PDF or Download Word. Both files downloaded straight away in our test. The letter is put together in your browser and never uploaded, and you can add a scanned signature.

What it doesn't do is write the letter for you. There is no AI in it. If you want a first draft written for you, draft it elsewhere, paste it in, and read it before sending, for the reasons above.

What we would actually do

• Press Download before you type anything. It takes ten seconds and tells you where the wall is, before you spend twenty minutes on a form.
• Treat any AI draft as a draft. In this test, AI letters left brackets like [Job Skill 1] in the text, repeated a paragraph, gave a junior a "lengthy career," and invented a compliment the applicant never made.
• If you already use Canva or Adobe, use them. Their free plans are real; the account is the price of entry.
• If you need a clean file tonight with no account, coverlettertemplates.io (print to PDF) or HonestPDF (PDF or Word) will get you there.
