What does flattening a PDF actually do?
It takes each interactive layer, form fields, signatures, stamps and comments, and draws its visible appearance directly into the page content, then removes the interactive object. The page looks exactly the same afterwards, but the values are now ordinary graphics instead of editable widgets.
Will I lose the text I typed into the form?
No. The values stay visible in exactly the same position, they simply stop being editable. What you lose is the ability to change them, which is the point.
Can a flattened PDF be un-flattened?
Not back into working form fields. The field structure is gone, so a recipient cannot click into it and type. Someone could still edit the page with a full PDF editor, so flattening prevents casual changes, it is not encryption.
Is this the same as protecting a PDF with a password?
No, and they solve different problems. Flattening stops the content from being edited as fields. A password stops the file from being opened or modified at all. If you need that, use the Protect PDF tool, and you can do both.
Does it flatten signatures?
Visible signature appearances are flattened into the page like any other annotation. A cryptographic digital signature is a different thing: flattening changes the file, which invalidates that signature, so flatten first and sign afterwards, not the other way round.
Why does my form print blank without flattening?
Some readers and printers only render the page content and ignore the interactive field layer, so the answers vanish. Flattening moves those answers into the page content, which is the reliable fix.
Does flattening reduce the file size?
Usually a little, because the form structure is removed, but it is not a compression tool. If size is what you care about, run the result through Compress PDF.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole operation runs in your browser using WebAssembly. Your PDF is never sent to a server, which matters because filled forms tend to hold personal information.
