Your browser will ask you to confirm, and it will use the word upload. Nothing is uploaded. It asks because the folder holds many files, and they are all read on your own device.

Telegram exports chat history from Telegram Desktop only. There is no export on the phone apps or on Telegram Web.

How to export a chat from Telegram

  1. Open Telegram Desktop on a computer. The phone apps and Telegram Web cannot export chat history.
  2. Open the chat, click the three dots at the top right, and choose Export chat history.
  3. Pick JSON or HTML. Either works here. Choose whether to include photos, then click Export.
  4. Telegram writes a folder to your computer. Drop that whole folder onto this page.

The first time you ask Telegram for an export it may hold the request for about a day and notify your other devices. That is an anti-abuse measure, not a problem with your account. Confirming the request from a phone or tablet you are already signed in on usually lifts the wait. Otherwise repeat the export at the time Telegram gives you, on the same computer.

What this does that printing does not

  • ✓One document, not five - Telegram splits a long chat across messages.html, messages2.html and so on, and printing gives you a PDF for each. This joins them.
  • ✓Pick a date range - Export just the week that matters instead of four years of conversation. Printing has no way to do this.
  • ✓Three layouts - Chat bubbles when it should look like the conversation, a document when it needs to be read on paper, a transcript when it needs to be short.

Your conversation stays on your device

The export is read and the PDF is built entirely inside your browser. No file, no message and no photo is sent anywhere. That matters more here than on most tools, because a chat export is one of the most revealing files a person owns.

Questions

How do I get the export out of Telegram?
In Telegram Desktop, open the chat, click the three dots at the top right and choose Export chat history. Pick JSON or HTML, decide whether to include photos, and Telegram writes a folder to your computer. Drop that folder here.
Can I just open the HTML export and print it to PDF?
Often, yes, and if that works for you it is the fastest route. Printing falls down on three things. Telegram splits a long chat into messages.html, messages2.html and so on, and printing gives you a separate PDF for each, while this joins them into one document. Printing cuts message bubbles in half at page breaks. And printing has no way to select a date range, so you get the whole conversation or nothing.
Does this work on my phone?
The converter does, but Telegram will not give you a file to feed it. Chat export exists only in Telegram Desktop, not in the iPhone or Android apps and not on Telegram Web. You need a computer for the export step.
JSON or HTML, which should I choose?
Either works. JSON keeps more structure, including who sent what and how messages reply to each other, so it is the better choice if you have it. HTML is the friendlier option to read on its own and this reads it just as well.
Are my messages uploaded anywhere?
No. The export is read in your browser and the PDF is built there. Nothing is sent to a server, which is also why there is no account and no size limit imposed from our side.
What happens to stickers, voice messages and videos?
Animated stickers are drawn from the still image Telegram ships beside them, because the animated file itself is not a picture. Voice messages and videos cannot be shown on paper at all, so they appear as a labelled line saying what was there and when.
Can I use the PDF as evidence?
It keeps the full thread with its timestamps in order, which is what most workplace and business record keeping needs. It is not a certified forensic capture. Courts that require authenticated digital evidence generally want a certified acquisition with a documented chain of custody, and a PDF you generated yourself is not that. Keep the original export folder alongside the PDF.
Is there a size limit?
None that we impose, because there is no server to impose one. The real limit is your own device: a very large export with thousands of photos will take a while and can run a browser tab out of memory. Exporting a date range instead of the whole history is the way around that.
